Annual Presidential Wreath-laying Ceremony for John Adams

12 PM Monday October 30, 2017

The Church of the Presidents and Discover Quincy invite you to attend the 50th annual Presidential Wreath-laying Ceremony for John Adams, 2nd President of the United States, on the 282nd anniversary of his birth.

The Presidential wreath will be presented and laid on the tomb of John Adams by members of the Naval Operations Center Quincy Color Guard, Paul Annexstad, Commander.

Featured speaker Sara Georgini will present "A Patriot's Piety: Tracing John Adams' Religious Journey," Her talk will explore what the Puritan legacy meant to John Adams, how the Braintree/Quincy congregation shaped his political activity, and why he struggled to incorporate religion in his diplomatic and presidential duties.

Sara Georgini, Ph.D., is the Series Editor for The Papers of John Adams, part of the Adams Papers Editorial Project at the Massachusetts Historical Society, and the author of Household Gods: The Religious Lives of the Adams Family (Oxford University Press, 2018).

In the spirit of the President’s concern for local education, the ceremony will also include student speakers from Quincy High School, North Quincy High Schooll, and The Woodward Schooll.

Music will be provided by the Navy Band Northeast Brass Quintet and the Quincy Choral Society.

A reception with delicious Konditor Meister birthday cake follows the ceremony.

For more information about the ceremonies, please email visitorsprogram@ufpc.org or call 617-773-0062.

Each year on their birthday anniversaries the President of the United Sates sends a wreath to the church to be placed on the tombs of the Presidents.   This tradition started during the administration of President Lyndon Johnson whereby a wreath of red, white & blue flowers are sent to the burial place of all deceased presidents on the anniversary of their birthday.
